Intervention Concept : Empower beneficiaries and help to realize sustainable development
Intervention Approach:
Advocacy
Project teams conduct an assessment on the waste pickers communities. Based on the good relation with people, community workers will expand the legal knowledge and basic human rights. In addition, it will select the project assistants from the waste pickers who will be the potential leaders for the project.
Capacity building
Knowledge and skill training — According to assessment, it will convene experts in hygiene, environment protection and vocational skills to convey relevant participative training and the training skills of partner education.
Building social network — With the leading of project assistants, a social network for waste pickers will be built ,where partners may share information and experience.
C. Facilities service — distribute the personal protection equipment with portable bag, like gloves, masks, bandage and medicine.
Empowerment: legal rights — Conduct rights education to make the waste pickers aware of basic rights and obligation as well, meanwhile, providing legal aids by hotline in case of law issues and emergency.
III .Intervention Effect/Output
i . Develop a handbook on legal rights and emergency for waste pickers.
ii . Select six project assistants from waste pickers, who will train and develop other 120 cadres engaged in partner education.
iii . Building a network with six project assistants and 120 cadres for partner education.
iv . Each cadre will attract 100 waste pickers and the direct beneficiaries will amount to 12,126.
v . Implement ten small business programs, each of which will help to increase the annual income by 30% for 5 families.
vi . Tail after ten targets and record their monthly income and number of work-related injuries.
vii . The National Association of Vocational Education of China (Shenzhen) will seek to submit the petition of waste pickers to government.
viii . Publish an investigation report about the need of waste pickers.
IV .The Progress of Project
Since the end of February, 2006, ICO has conducted preparatory investigation in six target districts, aiming to collect more information about the living condition and requirement of waste pickers. And over 100 waste pickers have been touched and followed up. Further initiatives will be shared on web, welcome your attention and suggestion. |
