Strengthening Implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility in Global Supply Chains (A research project of the World Bank, jointly implemented by Business for Social Responsibility, the Danish Institute for Human Rights, and Price Waterhouse Coopers Denmark. ICO conducted the China research portion, surveying factories and interviewing workers, 2003) In April 2003, the World Bank formally commissioned research the global supply chains on the developing countries , in order to strengthen the implementation of plans for corporate social responsibility. It also aimed to resolve and remove the difficulties and obstacles blocking the progress of CSR and ensure lasting benefit for companies and workers both. The project range included two developed countries and four developing countries, one of which was China.
Executive Summary
The specific objectives of this study are to identify the key barriers to improve implementation of CSR and prioritize viable options for addressing these barriers through the consultations and investigations. The objects of the investigation and consultation involve the whole global supply chain: MNC's directors, stakeholders, suppliers and workers in developed and developing countries, including American, Europe, China, India, Kenya and Honduras etc. China is preferred developing country in this project. The project group carried out the consultation and investigation on suppliers, stakeholders and workers in Hong Kong of China and mainland of China.
The recommendation report was finished on August 15, 2003, and referred by World Bank to Group 7, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, International Labor Organization, International Monetary Fund, UN Global Compact. Through the impact of these national governments and international organizations, the project expected to improve the CSR implementation in global supply chains, and help more and more workers in developing countries benefit from economic globalization.
